Print Quality Problems

Identify the visible pattern before running cleaning, alignment, or replacement procedures.

Identify the pattern

Different output patterns point to different causes. Faded pages, horizontal or vertical lines, missing colors, smudging, repeating marks, blank sheets, incorrect colors, ghosting, and poor alignment should be treated as separate symptoms.

  1. Print a printer-side quality or diagnostic page.
  2. Confirm paper type and print-quality settings match the loaded media.
  3. Check the diagnostic pattern for missing colors, repeating defects, alignment errors, or density problems.
  4. Run only the maintenance routine recommended for that pattern.
  5. Test again before repeating cleaning cycles.
Practical note: Save a sample of the defect. Repeating marks at regular intervals can be useful evidence for model-specific service documentation.

Paper matters

Inkjet photo paper, ordinary copy paper, envelopes, labels, cardstock, and laser-compatible media have different requirements. Printing on unsupported or incorrectly oriented media can cause smearing, poor density, curling, jams, or fuser problems.

  1. Verify the media is supported by the printer.
  2. Load the printable side and orientation correctly.
  3. Select the matching paper size and media type in the print dialog.
Practical note: Do not use inkjet-only media in a laser printer unless the media manufacturer explicitly marks it compatible with laser printing.
Brand-specific steps may differ. Use the manual and official manufacturer support resources for your exact printer model. Do not install unknown remote-access tools or disclose passwords, verification codes, or payment information.
